General information: Fluorescent dye is added to the air conditioning or heat pump system with refrigerant to detect leaks. The dye mixes with the oil in the compressor, making the oil fluorescent. The oil then migrates through the refrigerant system. Some of this fluorescent oil will seep out wherever the refrigerant is leaking. Because such a small amount of oil leaks through, it takes a substantial amount of time for enough oil to accumulate at the location of the leak for the leak to be visible. The time necessary for this process could be several months, to a year or more, depending on the size of the leak. We have found it to be most advantageous to wait until the system no longer cools properly before trying to locate the leak. By this time there is usually enough dye which has leaked out to locate the leak. Please note: If your system is not currently working properly, or when your system fails to work correctly, please call for an appointment to search for the leak. At that point we will come out and attempt to locate the leak. We use a black light to detect the fluorescent dye. If the leak is inside the house, it can be located during the day. If during the day we are still unable to locate the leak, we will arrange to to make a return appointment during darker conditions to allow the blacklight to work more effeciently. Once the leak is located, repairs can be made and the system can be placed back in service. If you have any questions regarding the process of the fluorescent dye or leak detection please do not hesitate to call. 859-233-1970 or 859-233-1979. Thank you.
